When the pandemic hit in March 2020, Project FIND didn't miss a beat. Although senior center congregate activities and meals were put on hold, we were concerned how the area's street homeless would continue to obtain food. Project FIND's Coffeehouse Senior Center staff stepped up and obtained a waiver from the New York City Department for the Aging to provide the street homeless with nutritious daily takeaway meals. An expansion of Project FIND's longstanding Day for Night program, the Grab and Go Initiative serves approximately 25 street homeless adults age 60 and above, five days a week-Monday through Friday. Participants are provided with a delicious hot meal consisting of chicken or beef, a starch, vegetables and fresh fruit. At a time when food insecurity is at an all-time high a support such as Project FIND's Grab and Go Program is vital. One client referred to the Grab and Go meals as "Great" and the "Best in the City." Clients have reported to the Coffeehouse Social Worker that they “don't know what they would do without this food” and they believe Project FIND is “looking out for them.”
When picking up their meal, participants may touch base with the Coffeehouse Social Worker who performs a myriad of supports for the homeless including: signing up clients to food pantries and soup kitchens for additional meals; enrolling people in NYC Housing Connects; helping complete applications for: MTA Reduced Fare MetroCard’s; the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid. Throughout the pandemic the social worker has been calling clients to do wellness checks. For those who may not have a phone or who have had their line disconnected the social worker sends postcards to clients requesting they call her so she may keep in touch and see how she may assist them. Participants where appropriate are referred to our Homeless In-Reach Plus (HIR+) program located nearby at the Woodstock Hotel for showers, clean clothes, case assistance and behavioral health services.
