Poetry by Pat Dasko

Pat.jpg Pat considers poetry to be the greatest defense against the juggernaut of technology, and if it hadn't been for Olympia Dukakis challenging her in January 1990 while working at her Whole Theatre in Montclair, NJ, we would never have had the pleasure of reading her poetry. Since then, Pat has had work published and has performed on NYC radio stations, open mikes and even Slammed into the finals at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

Please find two, of many of Pat's favourite poems she has written. 'I Miss my Friend' was written in January 2014. After Pat suffered a stroke in May 2013, going back to the poetry class has helped Pat on the road to recovery enormously in, as she says, 'keeping up the rhythm'. Also please find 'Inventory'.

I Miss My Friend

My mind is no longer

It has closed itself

                                inside of me

My mind never announced it was

                                      so ready to leave

When will it be full again

Will the unknowing be ready to

                                 give me hope

Will the message flying in and out

                              pull me in

There doesn’t seem to be

                                       anyone near me

Let me sit and wait for the wonderful

                                          new breeze to blow

INVENTORY

THEY TELL US TO “DUMB DOWN’ YOUR RESUME”

WAIT JUST A MINUTE, WE TELL THEM:

WE ONCE STOPPED A WAR.

THEY TELL US TO “CUT YEARS OFF YOUR AGE.”

WAIT A MINUTE, WE TELL THEM:

WE MARCHED FOR EQUAL RIGHTS.

WE KNOW PEOPLE GOT SHOT AT,

TEAR-GASSED, RUN OFF OF BACK ROADS.

AND IT ALL HAPPENED IN AMERICA. IT WAS ALL DONE BY U.S.

THEY TELL US TO “NOT ADMIT TO HIGH HONORS.”

WAIT A MINUTE, WE TELL THEM:

WE SIGNED PETITION REFERENDUMS,

PUSHED FOR VOTER REGISTRATIONS.

THEY TELL US TO “HOLD BACK YOUR INTELELLECT.”

WATI A MINUTE, WE TELL THEM:

WE ORGANIZED ECONOMIC BOYCOTTS.

TO HONOR THOSE WHO GOT TEAR-GASSED,

THOSE WHO GOT SHOT AT, RUN OFF BACK ROADS.

AND IT ALL HAPPENED IN AMERICA. IT WAS ALL DONE BY U.S.

WHERE DO YOU THINK THIS ATTITUDE IS LEADING

WHERE DO YOUT HINK OUR ENERGY IS GOING

DO YOU POSSIBLY THINK THAT WE’RE LISTENING

DO YOU THINK WE WILL EVEN TRY TO OBEY?

THIS GENERATION TOO OLD TO HIRE AND TOO YOUNG TO RETIRE

THIS GENERATION THAT NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO BE CHILDREN

THIS GENERATION THAT IS GETTING ITS SECOND WIND

THIS GENERATION THAT IS STEADILY BUILDING

THIS GENERATION THAT IS DEFINITELY STIRRING

THIS GENERATION THAT NEVER WAS CHRISTENED

THIS GENERATION CUT DOWN IN ITS PRIME TIME

THIS GENERATION WILL TO BE DIFFERENT

THIS GENERATION THAT HAS PAID ITS HARD DUES

THIS GENERATION THAT HAS SEEN TOO MUCH DYING

THIS GENERATION THAT ENDURED TOO MUCH SUFFERING

THIS GENERATION THAT WILL NOT BE PUT DOWN

THIS GENERATION THAT YOU CANNOT IGNORE

THEY TELL ME THINGS ARE NOW DIFFERENT

THAT NEW GLOBAL WORKRULES APPLY.

WAIT A MILLENNIUM, I TELL THEM:

MY GENERATION KNOW WELL HOW IT FEELS TO BE WINNERS

MY GENERATION KNOWS WELL OF STANDING TOGETHER

MY GENERATION’S CONSIENCE IN LOOKING STRAIGHT AT YOU

MY GENERATION’S FINGER IS POKING YOUR THIRD EYE

MY GENERATION KNOWS HOW TO CONTINUE

MY GENERATION GETS OFF ON THE GOOD FIGHT.

AND IT WILL HAPPEN IN AMERICA

AND IT WILL ALL ONLY BE DONE BY U.S.
