Small monthly donations can make a real difference!

Every year our Homeless In-Reach program works with hundreds of men and women.  Our Homeless In-Reach is one of the few programs in New York tailored specifically to the needs of homeless elders.  After spending many years on the street, homeless seniors often become resigned to their circumstances or distrustful of those who offer assistance.  Our deep engagement program has significant success in housing the long term street homeless.  Over a recent 18 month period we were able to house a homeless older person every 5.5 days.

 

$5 a month keeps our free Shower Rooms supplied with safety razors, soaps, shampoos, feminine hygiene supplies,and disposable towels - being able to get clean is often the first step on a road back to personal dignity and gives our social work team a strong point of contact to start working with people.

We have all walked by a homeless person, and wondered, what happened, how did this human being end up living on the street?  Especially if they are elderly, how can they live that way at all? How do they survive? If you asked, each would have a different story to tell.  Only the underlying theme would be the same:  they are alone and often estranged from their families, struggling to survive as they grow older and more frail.

$10 a month will help us clothe up to 8 individuals with clean socks, underwear and shirts,  sweaters and coats. As the cold weather sets in there's a a strong concern that the the numbers will return to the record high of seen in December 2014 of just under 60,000 people.
