Well, I have done my morning stretches and I’m off to meet with The ‘Hamilton Walkers’. The group meet every Wednesday at 10am for an hours walk in the local vicinity, aiming to cover a mile and a half.
Today, 23rd July, it was Central Park, with the goal being Bethesda Fountain. Leaving the Hamilton Center we walked down to Central Park, entering at 72nd, taking a right turn down a bark path onto a decline towards Le Pain Quotidien, who kindly gave us a few glasses of water, it was pretty hot today! Then heading past the Naumburg Bandshell, leading to a grand staircase which took us under the Lower Passage, a bit of respite from the heat, to then see the wonderful Bethesda Fountain, I think we were all quite tempted to jump in! We decided not to take the rowing boats out on the Lake and continued on the incline to Cherry Hill Fountain where we sat for a rest and recharge for the walk back, taking in another incline and Strawberry Fields. When we got back to Hamilton it was almost lunchtime and a hearty appetite had been worked up by the ‘Hamilton Walkers’.
After lunch the walkers have an opportunity to improve on their computer skills and do research on future walks they would like the group to do.
The ‘Hamilton Walkers’ was started May 14, 2014 by Ann Lemon for the some of the Hamilton community to socialize and reap the benefits of the multitude of health benefits walking has to offer.
There are all levels of fitness and ability, Ann takes all safety issues and traffic obstacles into consideration when planning the walks, also the various walking techniques for a mixture of terrains; flat, incline, decline, steps, cobbled, bark paths.
As a group, their starting goal is 50,000 steps, which of today they are only 50 steps away from, a fantastic achievement. Here’s to the next 50,000!
Walking is a terrifically beneficial good activity, it's cheap, it's simple, almost anybody can do it and it’s never too late to start!
